CO2 footprint

Fiskano is a trading company from Urk that has grown into a leading trader in the fishing industry in thirty years. Hedgehog Company investigated how much CO2 Fiskano has saved by changing the structure within the cod fillet production.

The old situation consisted of two different chains, a refrigerated and frozen chain. The cod is caught by day fishermen and landed in Norway the same day. From there, the fish was transported to Poland for processing. The cooled fish is then sent to Sweden where it is immediately put on the market or stored in a freezer for a maximum of 60 days.

In the new route, fishing is done by a ‘freeze trawler’. This trawler is at sea for a longer period of time. The fish is processed and frozen on board. After 5 to 6 weeks, the fish is brought ashore near Norway and then transported to Sweden.

The CO2 impact for all three chains has been calculated according to the ISO 14064 specifications. This calculation is divided into 3 facets. Firstly, the emissions from the boat during fishing, followed by the emissions during the transport of the product and finally the emissions during the storage of the product in a cold store. Together this forms the total amount of CO2 emissions of a chain. But to make it possible to compare the different supply chains, the total CO2 emissions have been divided by the production. This results in a quantity of kg CO2-eq per kg cod fillet. These results can be read in the table below.

By comparing the original routes with the new route, we can conclude that a CO2 emission reduction of 94% per kg of cod fillet has been achieved. Choosing the new route through Fiskano has therefore had a positive impact on reducing CO2 emissions. It also confirms that scaling up is efficient not only from an economic perspective, but also from a carbon emissions perspective.

It is important to note that this study only looked at carbon emissions and not at other impact categories such as the effect of the larger freezer trawlers on biodiversity or bycatch.
